Black and white photographs and negatives and some color photographs transferred from the department's "duplicate and dormant" photograph file. The photos document Wisconsin natural resources including state parks and forests, various rivers and streams, and outdoor recreation including hunting and fishing as well as DNR personnel, facilities, and activities such as law enforcement; management of fish, forest, and wildlife resources; conservation education and camps; Conservation Congresses; response to natural disasters such as fires and floods; and air and water pollution control and other environmental protection activities.

Chapter 426, Laws of 1927, created the Conservation Department. From 1915-1927, a full-time Conservation Commission (WIHV86-A1162) had directly administered the state's conservation programs.
